Vic: Police reportedly investigating break in at drug squad hq

MELBOURNE, Dec 25 AAP - Victoria Police are reportedly investigating a break-in at
the drug squad's headquarters - the third such security breach in recent years.

The Sunday Herald Sun said a powerful automatic handgun was stolen from a combination-locked
drawer in an inspector's office between September and October this year.

Quoting police sources the report, tagged exclusive, said a task force set up to investigate
a break-in three years ago at the squad's St Kilda Road headquarters had been wound down.

It failed to find enough evidence to lay charges over the 1996 break-in in which undercover
files identifying witnesses and undercover police were stolen from a locked strongroom.

The report said the police ethical standards department would continue the investigation
and that it was now investigating the latest security breach.

It said there had also been a break-in at the squad's headquarters in 1992.
