NSW: Fire in BHP Port Kembla plant

SYDNEY, Dec 21 AAP - Fire has destroyed a conveyor belt in BHP's Port Kembla steelworks
in the Illawarra.

The 90 metre-long steel belt, which runs through an elevated metal tunnel 20 metres
above the plant floor, ignited at around 9.30am (AEDT) today, a fire brigade spokesman
said.

Eight units comprising 30 firefighters fought the blaze, which at one stage threatened
a gas furnace pipeline.

The fire was brought under control within 90 minutes, a fire brigade spokesman said.

Nobody was injured in the blaze and the cause is being investigated.
