FED:Families should get compo: carbon poll

CANBERRA, April 19 AAP - A majority of Australians believe revenue raised from the
federal government's proposed carbon tax should go towards households, a survey shows.

The poll, conducted last week, shows 68 per cent want low and middle income earners
to be the focus of compensation to cover expected increases in electricity prices.

Just three per cent said big polluters should get compensation for a loss of profits.

ACTU president Ged Kearney said the poll confirmed what the unions already know - that
poorer Australians must be given a helping hand.

"While big polluters may be seeking hand-outs from government, working Australians
are interested in ensuring it is low and middle income earners who are looked after,"

she said.

Ms Kearney would like to see the revenue also spent on protecting jobs in industries
at risk and programs to boost clean energy technologies.

According to a separate question in the poll, 63 per cent of Australians believe money
should be invested in the renewables sector, while 53 per cent want communities and industries
to be assisted.

The poll results come as the government holds its monthly meeting on Tuesday with the
Australian Greens and the independents over the design of the carbon price.

Climate Change Minister Greg Combet is also expected to sit down with representatives
from trade-exposed industries, including coal and natural gas.

Headset turns computer into office phone ; Switch can save money and add several layers of convenience for users

Headset turns computer into office phone ; Switch can save money and add several layers of convenience for users
Byline: ANNE EISENBERG
Type: News

Companies can save money by simply buying employees headsets instead of desktop phones, with manufacturers offering sleek new models that plug into desktops, laptops or notebooks.

Headsets are staples for call center workers, travel agents and many other people who talk frequently on the telephone. With a headset, both hands are free to work, and a shoulder does not have to cradle the phone stiffly.
Now, headsets could start making many office telephones unnecessary, as businesses decide to let workers make calls with their computers.

Companies can save money by simply buying employees headsets instead of standard telephones, said Tavis McCourt, a managing director and analyst at Morgan Keegan, who follows the Internet telephony market. Software like Lync from Microsoft makes it possible to use computers efficiently for voice, video and other communication over the Internet, he said.

Headsets are useful because the computers common in most offices are not set up well for conducting conversations, said Gregory Burns, a telecommunications analyst at Sidoti, an equity research firm in New York. "You need an attachment for audio input and output," he said.

Desktop computers can have built-in microphones, but these are not ideal, he said. Conversations over a computer's microphone can distract people in other cubicles, the same way speaker phones can.

All of this has created an opportunity for companies that make headsets. Such manufacturers are ready to offer sleek models that plug into desktops, laptops or notebooks for quiet conversations and conference calls. Some of the new headsets switch easily among desk phones, computers and even cellphones.

"Put on your headset, and it gives you access to whatever device you choose to use," said Bob Hafner, a managing vice president at Gartner, the marketing research firm in Stamford, Connecticut.

The move toward telephony for computers will gain ground quickly in the coming years, he said, as people communicate more by computer, clicking on the names of people they want to reach, for example, instead of dialing them.

But computer calling will not work for everyone in the office, said Mr. McCourt, the analyst at Morgan Keegan. Dialing on a computer, for example, is not as fast as on a standard telephone. Many employees use their telephones mainly to receive calls or to reach other people in their companies. In such cases, he said, a headset connected to a computer will work well.

Plantronics, a headset company in Santa Cruz, California, will offer a wireless headset, the Savi 730, this year that works on a computer, a standard telephone or a mobile phone, said Karen Auby, a company spokeswoman.

A stylish new wireless headset, the OfficeRunner, made by the German audio company Sennheiser, lets people communicate as far as 400 feet, or 122 meters, from their telephones, said Mike Faith, chief executive of Headsets.com, its U.S. distributor. The headset can work with most telephones, he said, and with PCs or Macintosh computers by connecting the base to the USB port.

People who want to use a headset with an iPad can buy the Jawbone Icon. The headset also works with Macs that have Bluetooth, said Jenny Noyola, a customer service representative at Headsets.com.

Jerry Plant, who is deaf in one ear and wears a hearing aid in the other, bought an OfficeRunner in part because of the sound quality. "It couldn't be any better," he said.

Mr. Plant wears a headset so his hands are free to use the computer as he manages portfolios and offers investment advice at the company he founded, Mark 1 Asset Management, in Oklahoma City.

If headset sales soar, it will be in part because of PC software, said Mr. Hafner of Gartner.

For example, people can easily use their computers to set up conference calls by dragging and dropping the names of colleagues across a screen.

"The key component driving headset activity is software that makes a PC more effective and functional than a desk phone," he said. "That's why business communications are converging on PCs and mobile smartphones."

EDS: Updates number of people without power

By 2pm (AEDT), more than 17,000 Powercor customers had lost supply, while more than
9,000 CitiPower customers were also hit, Mr Batey said.

Bureau of Meteorology (BoM) senior forecaster Terry Ryan told AAP gusts of up to 100km/h
had been recorded around Melbourne and wider parts of the state, as a result of a low
weather system.

"These winds have lasted quite a long time. Often, they only last for a few hours but
they've grown worse as the day has gone on," Mr Ryan said.

"It's a bit unusual. Often these winds are more of a spring time event."

Mr Ryan said wind gusts across western parts of the state were expected to drop to
60km/h this afternoon, while a weak storm front would bring scattered showers to parts
of the state by this evening.

Meantime, the State Emergency Service (SES) said it had attended 822 jobs across the
state, including 600 in metropolitan Melbourne.

Adele Buhagiar, of the Country Fire Authority (CFA), said a number of powerlines had
been brought down across the Dandenongs, in areas including Boronia, Olinda and Emerald.

Powerlines were also down around Geelong and Warrnambool, while the CFA had also been
called to grassfires around the Dandenongs, she added.

Rural Ambulance Victoria spokesman Andre Coia said gale force winds could cause treacherous
conditions on regional and rural roads, strewing debris in the path of vehicles.

Mr Coia said drivers should expect to encounter obstacles on the road, slippery conditions
and decreased visibility.

A dust storm creating low visibility may also have played a part in a three car pile-up
along the Western Highway this morning.

The accident happened near Buangor, in the state's west, with ten people taken to hospital
suffering a range of injuries, including a 25-year-old woman with neck and back injuries.

The high winds had also forced the closure of the Melbourne International Flower Show,
which opened today.

Fed: Government won't be rushed over helicopter decision: Nelson

Fed: Government won't be rushed over helicopter decision: Nelson

SYDNEY, April 17 AAP - A decision whether to dump a controversial plan to buy Seasprite
helicopters for Australia's navy will be made by the end of the year, Defence Minister
Brendan Nelson says.

The $1 billion project dates from 1997 when the government ordered 11 helicopters from
the US company Kaman to operate from Anzac frigates.

The expected delivery date of 2001 has been blown out to 2011, prompting the government
to reassess the order.

There have been problems with aircraft flight control systems but the major cause of
delay was in integrating the software combat system.

Dr Nelson has said he remained satisfied the navy still needed the capability for a
helicopter, flying from a frigate, to fire anti-ship missiles.

He told reporters in Sydney today that he has been reviewing the plan for more than
a year but will not rush the government's final decision.

"We're ensuring that all of the information, which is relevant to responsible decision-making,
is available to us before we do," he said.

"In the meantime, we continue to work with the company in seeing that the milestones
are being met."

He said the final decision would be made sometime this year.

a backbench revolt over moves to have all boat arrivals processed in offshore detention

He says a lot of changes have been made in the bill to accommodate the concerns of

what the bill's all about.

Liberal moderates are worried the laws will dismantle a key concession they won from

NSW: Sydney silent over Granville double murder

NSW: Sydney silent over Granville double murder

SYDNEY, April 3 AAP - Tight-lipped residents are withholding crucial details about
a double murder in Sydney, State Crime Command chief Graeme Morgan says.

Police have promised "absolute confidentiality" to anyone with information about the
shooting murders of boxer Bassam Chami, 26, and his friend Ibrahim Assad, 27, in Blaxcell
Street, Granville, last week.

Detectives were again called to the western Sydney street last night after shots were
fired into an empty house about 8.30pm (AEST).

They found a number of spent shell casings close to the scene of last week's fatal shooting.

Assistant Commissioner Morgan today said he did not know whether the latest shooting
was an act of retaliation for the murders.

"The obvious concern is that it is an act of retaliation," Mr Morgan told ABC Radio.

"If that's so, it's the second apparent act of retaliation because there was another
shooting on Friday night at Regents Park which we are concerned about."

Mr Morgan said there was "no doubt in the world" that some south-western Sydney residents
knew more about the shootings than they were telling police.

"They are the people that have the power to stop this, and obviously we appeal for
them to come forward," he said.

"We can offer them absolute confidentiality.

"We can offer them protection if necessary, we'll take the information anonymously,
but they must see their responsibility and assist police.

"It depends on the community, quite frankly.

"If they are prepared to come forward, if they're prepared to assist police we can stop it today.

"But if they don't come forward then I fear we won't be able to stop it for some little
time to come".

Mr Morgan said police shared community concerns about the number of handguns on the
streets, and were making progress in decreasing their use.

He said Task Force Gain, established in 2003 to tackle gun violence in Sydney's south-west,
had contributed to this progress.

Hague, William

Hague, William (b. Rotherham, Yorkshire, 26 Mar. 1961) British; Conservative Party Leader 1997–2001 When he was elected Conservative Party leader in June 1997, William Hague became the youngest party leader since William Pitt, 200 years earlier, as well as the first party leader to have attended a comprehensive school. He seemed marked out for political stardom ever since his much-lauded address to the Conservative conference at the age of 16 in 1977. As a student at Oxford University, he followed a time-honoured path of becoming president of the Oxford University Conservative Association and president of the Students' Union. After university he took a lucrative job with the management consultants McKinsey.

In January 1989 Hague was elected for the safe Conservative seat of Richmond in a by-election. After a spell as a junior social security minister he joined the Cabinet as Secretary of State for Wales in June 1995, when the holder of the post resigned to challenge John Major for the party leadership.

Hague is often accused of lacking convictions. This may be the product of calculation, his relative youth, or the short period in which he was been in the House of Commons. Although he is on the centre right of the party it is difficult to associate him with settled views, apart from hostility to the single European currency. This outlook actually worked to his advantage when there was a leadership vacancy after the 1997 election defeat and John Major resigned. Hague was fortunate in the absence of more favoured and senior candidates, due to ill health or to a failure to hold their seats at the general election. Three other candidates were clearly on the right wing of the party and Kenneth Clarke was clearly on the liberal wing. Hague had no strong enemies and beat Clarke on the third and final ballot by 90 votes to 72. He promised to unify his bruised party. Although he clearly spoke for the Eurosceptic majority in his party there is a considerable Europhile minority and it remains to be seen how he keeps the party united.
